And so we meet again!
Hey O.D.M’ers. I’d just like to say that the group meeting yesterday was a blast. It was a lot of fun and one of the best discussions we’ve had. Everyone seemed to enjoy the book with some minor reservations about the length and some of the characters being disposable. I enjoyed discussing the taboo relationship between Lin and Issac and everyone had something interesting to say regarding the way the author had constructed the world in the book. If anyone has anything more to add to the discussion feel free to chat away here.
For the next book Dan has chosen Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill. It’s a lot smaller than Perdido Street Station so we’ll get it done in a month I’m sure. It’s a contemporary ghost story about a faded rock star who buys a spook off of the internet. It’s also worth noting that Joe Hill is the son of Stephen King so it will be interesting to note any similarities and differences in their writing styles.
The nest meeting will be Wednesday 31/03/2010 at 6pm in Taurus Bar. That’s 5 weeks to read the book so we have plenty of time.
Enjoy the book and I’ll see you next time.
Seth
Hi O.D.M’ers (stop trying to make O.D.M’ers happen Gretchen, It isn’t going to happen!) Just a quick message to let you all know that the next meeting is on Wednesday 24th February, around 6pm in Taurus Bar.
Apologies for the cancellation of the last meeting. We thought that Perdido Street Station was too big a book to finish within a month and so we have postponed the discussion until next week.
I have been lapse in updating the group/meeting information and letting everyone know what’s been going on and for that I’m very sorry. I realise that this can put off new members from joining and I would just like to say that I’m 100% committed to the book group and will update the information for next meetings a.s.a.p.
We haven’t seen any new faces at the group for awhile and so I’d like to take the opportunity to invite and welcome any people who have considered popping by but who have yet to come to a meeting for whatever reason. We’re a very friendly bunch and there will be free sweeties for any new members at the next group. How’s that for an incentive :)
Hope to see you all next week, or failing that the meeting after.
Good reading!

Hi everyone. The next book we will be discussing is Perdido Street Station by China Mieville. The meeting is on Wednesday 27th January in Taurus Bar at 6pm. See you then!
For the next meeting we decided on a graphic novel called Fun Home by Alison Bechdel. It’s a short read so people won’t need to worry about cramming it in during the holiday season. You can buy it cheap on Amazon Marketplace in the used section. We also decided that the next meeting will be December 16th so as to not get in the way of Christmas and New Year’s plans.
So the next group will meet 16/12/2009 in Taurus Bar on Canal St. at 6pm and we will be discussing Fun Home by Alison Bechdel. Hope to see everyone there!
Hi all. The next meeting is at 5.50 in Taurus Bar on Wednesday 25th November. We will be discussing Geek Love by Katherine Dunn. Hope to see you there!
Seth
Hello. The next book is The Children of Men by P.D James. The meeting is on 28th October in Taurus Bar at 5.30.
See you there!
Hello all.
The next book we will be discussing is Wicked by Gregory Maguire.
We’ll be meeting in Taurus Bar at 5.30 on 30th September.
The next book is Z is for Zachariah by Robert C. O’Brien
The next meeting is on 26th August, 5.30 at Taurus Bar.
Howdy all. Thanks to everyone who came to the House of Leaves book group, personally I think that it was our liveliest one yet, with everyone having read the book and having something to say. Feel free to continue the discussion below or at ourdarkmaterials.co.uk.
And welcome to the fellow who came along towards the end of the meeting, I hope we didn’t scare you off and made you feel at home.
We decided on mark’s choice for the next meeting, Ilium by Dan Simmons. It’s a sci-fi re-telling of The Iliad so that ought to provoke a good discussion. I just bought mine on Amazon Marketplace for £2.75 including postage and packaging, so it’s worth looking there if you can’t find it in libraries.
I hope to see you all for the next group at 5.30 at Taurus Bar on 29th July.

Hey all. Many thanks for those who attended the Valley of the Dolls book group, we had a fun discussion, both of its campy and more serious themes. If anyone wants to discuss it in further depth or talk about something we didn’t cover at the group then feel free to start a discussion below.
The next book we chose was House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. It’s a very scary post-modern (post-post-modern?) haunted house book, with the twist being that it purports to be based on a real event. Think The Blair Witch Project crossed with an academic documentary.
So the next book is House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski, with the group meeting to discuss it on 24th June, in Taurus Bar on Canal st. at 5.30.
Happy reading!
